Piroplasms

Single-celled organisms of the genus Babesia that live parasitically in the blood of dogs and other animals. They cause piroplasmosis, a potentially life-threatening disease transmitted by ticks. Diagnosis is made by blood microscopy or PCR, and treatment is with antiprotozoals.
